THEY ARE USING FREE EMAIL ACCOUNTS WHICH ARE @LIVE.COM; @HOTMAIL.COM; @ YAHOO.COM. THEY ARE ALSO USING ONLY A POST OFFICE BOX AS AN ADDRESS. WE HAVE REPORTS THAT THEY DO NOT ANSWER THE PHONE IF YOU ARE CALLING WITHOUT A CALLER ID NUMBER OR ARE USING A NUMBER THAT HAS BEEN BLOCKED. THERE IS GOOD REASON TO BELIEVE THAT THESE ARE THE SAME PRINCIPALS WHO RAN THE SAME SCAM OUT OF THE CENTRAL MONTANA AREA LAST YEAR.
BIG SKY HAY COMPANY / BIG SKY HAY LLC - LEWISTOWN MT OUT OF BUSINESS AND HAVE LEFT TOWN. THERE ARE NUMEROUS LAWSUITS AGAINST THIS COMPANY BROUGHT BY CUSTOMERS WHO RECEIVED NO HAY AND NO REFUNDS AND PRODUCERS WHO HAVE NOT BEEN PAID FOR THEIR HAY WHICH WAS SHIPPED OUT. THERE IS REASON TO BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE STILL IN MONTANA AND MAY NOW BE CONDUCTING BUSINESS UNDER ANOTHER COMPANY NAME USING ALIASES FOR THEMSELVES AND USING SEVERAL DIFFERENT EMAIL ADDRESSES.
NORTHWEST HAY COMPANY - LEWISTOWN MT OUT OF BUSINESS. THE PRINCIPALS OF THIS COMPANY HAD ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROL OF BIG SKY HAY COMPANY (SEE ABOVE) AND HAVE LEFT TOWN.
HIGH MOUNTAIN HAY - LEWISTOWN MT NOT MUCH IS KNOWN ABOUT THIS COMPANY AT THIS TIME, HOWEVER, REPORTS INDICATE THAT THE PRINCIPAL OF THIS COMPANY IS THE SAME AS NORTHWEST HAY COMPANY. AN ADDRESS GIVEN TO A CUSTOMER FOR THIS COMPANY WAS A NON-EXISTENT LEWISTOWN MT RESIDENTIAL ADDRESS AND THE PHONE NUMBER IS NOW DISCONNECTED.
JOEY NEAL/NEAL FARMS - CALIFORNIA (REPORTEDLY SOUTH OF SACRAMENTO) WE HAVE SPOKEN TO SEVERAL PERSONS WHO HAVE SENT MONEY TO THIS PARTY FOR HAY THAT HAS NEVER ARRIVED.
HUBERT THOMAS - QUALITYTOALL@YAHOO.COM THIS PARTY WILL EMAIL YOU ONCE YOU POST A "HAY WANTED" AD ON ANY HAY SITE. DO NOT SEND HIM ANY MONEY. HE APPEARS TO HAVE ADDRESSES IN KANSAS AND CANADA. HE WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY AND YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY HAY.

WE DON'T THINK THAT THERE IS A PRODUCER OR BROKER IN THIS COUNTRY WHO HAS NOT RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM A SCAMMER. SOMETIMES THEY WILL ALSO MAKE PHONE CALLS USING A SERVICE FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED SO NO CALLER ID NUMBER SHOWS UP.
Scammers operate mostly by
e-mail. Their e-mails tend to have some or all of these qualities:
Offering payment by cashier's check or money order only.
Insisting on paying more than you're asking.
Asking you to send cash on to a 3rd party, such as the hay shipper.
Additional warning flags, any of which should make you suspicious:
Poor spelling and odd word choices (not a native English speaker).
Lack of knowledge or interest in the hay itself.
Unusual name, unusual e-mail address.
Refusing to speak by phone; insisting on corresponding by e-mail only.
